2020-08-18 · Walter Richard Sickert (31 May 1860 – 22 January 1942) was a British painter and printmaker who was a member of the Camden Town Group of Post-Impressionist artists in early 20th-century London. He was an important influence on distinctively British styles of avant-garde art in the mid- and late 20th century.

She first studied art at the Brussels School of Art and then in London at the Central School of Arts and Crafts and the Slade School of Art. When he recovered, Sickert took what might be considered a drastic step for an artist by changing his name from Walter to Richard, his middle name. Considering what he had just gone through and the fact that he himself was the model for the painting, it seems very clear that the subject of the painting is not Lazarus per se but Sickert himself who had just risen from his death-like sickbed.

He was ‘taught’ by the American artist, James McNeil Whistler, and following in his example drew directly on the plate in the same way as he might draw in a sketchbook. Born in Munich, Germany, in 1860, Walter Richard Sickert was the son of Oswald Sickert, a little-known artist, and Eleanor “Nelly” Henry, the illegitimate daughter of noted astronomer Richard Sheepshanks, whose birth was the result of his long-term affair with an Irish Artists who exhibited with Sickert at his Fitzroy Street studio were interested in depicting the people, events and atmosphere of this rather sleazy, boarding-house part of north London around Camden. Sickert treats the reality of Mrs Barrett, her red blouse and her stoic acceptance, as a serious, worthwhile subject. This is new.
